Securus Technologies Stops Inmate Cell Phone Calls

Securus Technologies has recently instituted some important changes in their inmate communications system. These changes are partly due to the experiences and observations of an ex-corrections officer in charge of confiscating contraband, Robert Johnson. Johnson, himself was a victim of inmates using cell phones to order a hit. He and his family were attacked. He nearly died. His family survived the attack, but he was shot six times.


Robert Johnson worked at Lee Correctional Institution for 15 years. He was very good at his job and a few inmates decided to get pay back for his dedication. They hired a hit man to avenge the confiscation of a package worth $50,000 to the inmates. Two weeks after the package was confiscated, on March 5, 2010 at 5:30 in the morning, Johnson’s door was kicked in and two men rushed in. One man knocked him down. He lost consciousness and while unconscious, he was shot him six times in the stomach and chest.


Johnson woke up on the bathroom floor and was rushed to the hospital. He assumed he would die, but somehow with doctor’s care he survived. He has been on a mission to change the regulations around cell phone usage by prison ever since that shooting.


Since that horrific tragedy, Johnson has been warning the prison system of the dangers of smuggled cell phones in the hands of incarcerated inmates. Time and again, the cell phone has been smuggled in to inmates who then use the devices to plot additional crimes with cohorts who are still freely functioning criminals on the outside. Johnson combined his knowledge with Securus Technologies to devise a way to stop cell phone usage inside prisons.


The technology utilized is called a Wireless Containment System. Essentially, when an inmate makes a cell phone call from inside a prison using the Wireless Containment System, the call is routed through the system and if it is not connecting numbers cleared through the system, the call will not go through. Instantly, criminal planning is nipped in the bud. Lives are saved and criminal acts are limited.


Inmates in prison have to use pay phones or prison phones that they have paid subscriptions to use. Cell phones have never been allowed, but a number of prisoners smuggled them in and with no technology to stop their use, made calls to conduct criminal activities from inside prison. Securus has put an end to those kinds of abuses of the phone system. According to Securus, prisons that have instituted their Wireless Containment System have stopped 1.7 million inmate calls.
